Foo Fighters Producer Sheds Light On Grammy Nominee
Wed, 8 Feb 2012 07:48:37 EST -

Butch Vig tells MTV News he's 'really proud' of Wasting Light, up for Album of the Year at Sunday's Grammys.
By James Montgomery

Over the past two decades, Butch Vig has produced albums like Nevermind, Siamese Dream and 21st Century Breakdown (to name just a few), and yet he's never helmed a project quite like the Foo Fighters' Wasting Light. Recorded — and mastered — entirely on tape, in Dave Grohl's garage, it was a deliberately anachronistic disc that not only helped rejuvenate the Foos themselves, but was the kind of Herculean undertaking Vig won't forget anytime soon.

And, in recognition of that undertaking — and the rave reviews Wasting Light has earned since being released last year — the Foos head into Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards with six nominations, including a nod for the night's biggest prize: Album of the Year. And in the lead-up to the show, Vig (whose work on the disc earned him a Producer of the Year nom) took time to look back on the making of Light, both the good — and the bad.

"I'm really proud of it. Even though it was in the garage and it was a lot of hard work doing it to tape, we had so much fun recording with Dave and the Foos. It's one of the most fun albums I've worked on in my whole career," he told MTV News. "There was something about making it, where every day was by the seat of your pants, but between the vibe of the band and the songs, God, we laughed a lot. Dave is one of the hardest-working men I know, but he loves to f--- around. He'd be playing some guitar part and his daughter would walk in and he'd start making goofy faces, and we're all on the floor. And he's still playing the part f---ing perfect. He definitely embraced it. To be honest, I didn't want it to end."

Of course, that doesn't mean there weren't a few setbacks along the way. Basically everything about Wasting Light created challenges at one point or another — including Grohl's "no computers or else" edict.

"I've recorded hundreds of records on tape, but I haven't for over 10 years, so when Dave told me he wanted to do it that way, I looked him in the eye and said, 'OK, we can do this,' but I thinking, 'Oh sh--, oh sh--' the whole time," Vig laughed. "And I started talking to our engineer, and he was like, 'OK, we'll record on tape, and then we'll finish everything in ProTools.' And then Dave said, 'There are no computers in the studio. If I see a computer, I'm going to firebomb it and throw it out the window.'

"So, we knew it was going to be tape the entire process, and it was kind of crazy. Just the nature of that process forces you to completely rethink how you're going to do everything," he continued. "And the band has to be great, because you can't fix anything. I've had a couple of younger bands come up to me and say, 'Hey, Butch, do you think you want to do [another album on] tape?' And my answer is always the same: 'Only if you can play as good as the Foo Fighters.' "

And though he finished work on the disc more than a year ago, Vig said he still can't help listening to Light ("My daughter is always playing it around the house, and my wife has it in her car constantly, so I'm still being inundated by it," he laughed), which is rare for him. Then again, there are few albums he's as proud of as this one, and not just because it scored a boatload of Grammy noms. It's the memories he has from making the record that will stay with him forever — most notably, the making of standout track "I Should Have Known," which brought him, Grohl and former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic back together for the first time in nearly 20 years.

"To me, that song is definitely the darkest moment on the album, but I kind of find it exhilarating when I listen to it. I remember Dave was sitting a foot away from me when he sang it, and the whole vocal take [on the album] is the first performance he did," Vig said. "And I just remember the hair on the back of my neck going up, going, 'This is happening right now, he means all these words, they're about people he's known that he's lost.' ... And I still feel that way when I hear it now.

"And, of course, after Krist finished his bass overdub, we sat and talked for about three or four hours. Dave and I split a bottle of wine; I think Krist drank about a half a bottle of whiskey. And it was great, because we were talking about when we were recording Nevermind," he continued. "Not so much the actual song recording, but, like, driving over the hill to go see the Butthole Surfers, and Krist was driving after he'd had about a half a bottle of whiskey, and I'm going, 'Dude, pull over, I gotta drive!' and then Kurt seeing Rick Rubin at the Buttholes show and running up to him and pretending to shag his leg. It was a great experience having them both in the room, one I'll never forget."

Adele Opens Up About Throat Surgery Before Grammys

Sunday is shaping up to be quite a big day for Adele. Not only is the big-voiced diva up for six awards at the Grammys, but she will also open up about her recent throat surgery in a "60 Minutes" interview, airing on CBS immediately before the awards show.

In a teaser for the TV special, the British songstress speaks with Anderson Cooper about her vocal-cord procedure as well as how she dealt with the post-surgery restrictions. "They put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp and kind of laser your hemorrhage back together and fix it," Adele wearily told the news anchor.

She was ordered not to speak a word throughout the months of November and December, but the songstress made the best of a not-so-bright situation by using notepads and a text-to-speech cell phone application to communicate with others.

"It was really hard. I love talking," she said.

The singer confessed that the advances in technology made it a little difficult to say what was really on her mind. "I love to swear, and most of them you can't swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I'm still really getting my point across," she said with a smile.

Adele's road to recovery will come full-circle when the singer performs at Sunday night's Grammys. The U.K. songstress recently tweeted her excitement about returning to the stage: "Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys. It's been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can't wait."

Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne Tour swept North America last fall, and one highlight of the large-scale production was the duo's multiple performances of their hit single "N---as in Paris." When the Throne rolled through Vancouver in December, they played the song a record 11 times, and on Thursday, they will finally roll out an official video to accompany the single.

The video will hit MTV.com at 12:05 p.m. Thursday and will feature footage from the Los Angeles stop of their Watch the Throne Tour.

During that Vancouver show, the Throne performed "Paris" for 40.25 minutes, according to Rolling Stone, while the average time per date was approximately 18 minutes.

Thus far, the Throne have released only one video to accompany their album. The Spike Jonze-directed clip for "Otis" premiered in August with a brief cameo from comedian Aziz Ansari, but a bulk of the video found 'Ye and Jay taking a chainsaw to a Maybach, which they then filled with models.

During an interview with MTV News last summer, producer Hit-Boy explained how he crafted the popular "Paris" beat.

" 'N---as in Paris' came about from me having a beat idea already. When I went to New York, I just further went into it," Hit-Boy said of linking up with the Throne. "It was just a batch of beats. Kanye asked me for some beats, and that was one of the beats I gave him. ... [Kanye and Jay-Z] actually went over to Paris; I didn't get to make that trip. Next thing I know, they're like, 'Yo, I need all the files for that beat.' "

Tune in to MTV.com at 12:05 p.m. Thursday to catch the new video for the Throne's "N---as in Paris."

Dwayne Johnson tells MTV News that the 'pec pop of love' featured in the 'Mysterious Island' trailer 'gets the attention of a woman.'

Just in time for Valentine's Day, we have a special treat for all you would-be lovers out there curious about the best ways to woo a woman, courtesy of a very knowledgeable and trusted source: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Johnson is making another splash on the big screen this weekend in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." You may or may not have seen a trailer for the film that contains a pec-popping Johnson trying to teach Josh Hutcherson how to romance Vanessa Hudgens (Hutcherson's love interest in the film) and ladies in general.

When MTV News caught up with Johnson during a press day for the upcoming family-friendly adventure film, we asked about the accuracy and practicality of his character's three "rules" for women.

"It's very accurate," Johnson assured us. "Number one, with women you want to go opposite your instincts. Generally with men, teenagers, it doesn't matter the age, you're well-intended, your instincts tell you to say something, oftentimes especially if it's emotional you're going to regret it, and you're going to end up apologizing to your girl. Inevitably, it always happens.

"You have to be sensitive," he said of his second rule. "Girls just don't want washboard abs and chests like mine; they need sensitivity. The other thing, this is the most important thing, it's kind of like jazz, you've got to wait for it; it's called the 'pec pop of love,' " Johnson revealed, with a brief demonstration of his skills in "popping" the muscles in his chest on command.

"It gets the attention of a woman. I didn't say that that was it," he added when we expressed disbelief in the pec pop's actual powers of persuasion. "It gets the attention of a woman, then you have to be a gentleman after that and you gotta come with some good lines."

When asked if Johnson has actually used the move in real life, he assured us of its success.

"Oh, multiple times," he said with a knowing smile. "I've made many a girl into a new woman doing the pec pop of love."

'Safe House' actor details the 'quick little brawl' he got into in Amsterdam when he was 20.

Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington get plenty of action in their new thriller "Safe House," which revolves around Reynolds' character trying to prevent the escape/kidnapping of a dangerous rogue CIA agent (Washington) from the safe house where he works.

When MTV News caught up with Reynolds, we asked him why this story is more intriguing than most action thrillers, as well as whether he's had any real-life fighting experience to bring an extra edge to his character.

"It's such a great character piece," Reynolds said of the film's appeal. "You have two characters that are obviously diametrically opposed but they're sort of marching toward one another as opposed to away from one another. My character is an idealist, [Washington's] is basically a sociopath. They're taking slow, steady steps toward each other, and by the end they're kind of integrating," he explained. "Factor in Denzel Washington, who is one of the greatest living actors today, and [director] Daniel Espinosa, who is a young guy with a fresh take on the genre."

With regard to the hand-to-hand fighting in the film, we asked Reynolds to take us through the last time he was in an actual fight.

"I was in Amsterdam and I was probably about 20," Reynolds recalled. "People can wander around a little affected there, and this guy was on something funny and he just came at me. I don't know what he did but he just came at me. I was 20 years old and it was all a blur. I ended up in this quick little brawl and then it was over. Then the next thing I knew the police were escorting me to the train station and asking me to leave. Not because I was in trouble, but because they thought, 'If this guy sees you again, he's going to stab you.' I was escorted off the city limits."

Rap veterans Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem have all continued to exercise their hip-hop dominance, but over the past year, a new generation of MCs has made significant impact in the game over the past year. So when Young Money's Tyga was asked to make a pick for the "Hottest MC in the Game," he gave a nod to the new class.

Of course, the "Rack City" rapper nominated himself for the top spot in MTV's "Hottest MCs in the Game" debate, but he also opened the conversation up and included some other talented newcomers. "It's a lot of artists that I like now that are around my age and that are new, from Wale to J. Cole to Big Sean, Meek Mill," Tyga rattled off when MTV News caught up with him at a shoot for his "Rack City" remix video.

Tyga finds that he has more in common with this new crop of artist, as they share a generational bond. "A lot of those artists I can really relate to because we're close in age and a lot of the stuff they're talking about is modern day and going on right now," he said. "I salute all those dudes." Well, Tyga will have to wait until Monday, when the top 10 "Hottest" countdown begins on MTV News and then tune in to "Hottest MCs in the Game VII" half-hour television special on MTV2 on February 19 when the top five "Hottest MCs in the Game" are revealed.

Who is your pick for "Hottest MC"? Let us know in the comments!

Spider-Man 'Belongs To Everybody,' Andrew Garfield Says

'I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror,' the 'Amazing Spider-Man' star tells MTV News.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

With the release of the new trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man," fans got their first extended look at Andrew Garfield's take on the wall crawler before the movie hits theaters in July. He's darker and a bit more sarcastic, but with a series reboot coming so soon after the three films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, comparisons between the two are bound to dominate much of the conversation.

Garfield doesn't necessarily see the need for comparison and told MTV News' Josh Horowitz that he would have a hard time describing any differences.

"I can't answer that, really. I don't know. I know that I saw the Sam Raimi/ Tobey Maguire version before it was legally out. I was so excited to see it, I got a pirate copy," Garfield told MTV News before a screening event Monday. "I was blown away. [Tobey has] been Spider-Man in my imagination since then, in my mind's eye."

The star explained how "The Amazing Spider-Man" was made with the series' history in mind and how that added to the story.

"Thinking about those movies outside of just knowing the history that was supporting our movie, we are just another chapter in the legacy," he said. "I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror and attempt to do it justice."

Garfield has never kept his own fandom a secret, having even appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in store-bought Spidey regalia. That passion played a big part in how he thinks about the role.

"I do feel like he's in me, like all true fans do," he said. "That's what being a fan is of a character like this: feeling like there's no separation between you and them and that you have ownership over them. Ultimately, you have no ownership over it, because he belongs to everybody."

When it comes down to it, the actor in the suit doesn't actually matter, according to Garfield. "The symbol is bigger than any actor playing him and any particular movie or comic book," he said. "The symbol of the mask, the symbol of the suit, it doesn't even matter who's in it, as long as somebody's in it to keep the symbol alive. That's what's important to me."

But as Uncle Ben said, "With great power, comes great responsibility." Though it may not matter to Spider-Man fans who is in the suit, getting up every morning to play the man is a different story.

"In terms of how I approached it, I just approached it every day I woke up. My first thought was 'Oh, boy,' " Garfield said. "Then my second thought was, 'Remember, just go from a place of being a fan and caring as deeply as you do.' You have to just let go and trust from there on. If people like it, people like it."

Black Keys Talk Arena Tour, El Camino Follow-Up

Band already having discussions about a new album — but need to find time to do it.
By James Montgomery

Next month, the Black Keys will kick off their first-ever North American arena tour, an accomplishment the dynamic duo never thought possible 10 years ago, when they were mowing lawns (and working the buffet circuit) in their hometown of Akron, Ohio.

And, truth be told, they're still trying to wrap their heads around playing such massive venues, though, thanks to the success of their Brothers and El Camino albums, they're slowly beginning to realize that things have changed — for the best, of course.

"Things are obviously different; we're playing arenas everywhere, and it's crazy," frontman Dan Auerbach told MTV News. "I don't know; it's all very new for us. I think we're still trying to get used to the idea of playing such big shows wherever we go."

"[When we first started], I'd never even been to a concert that was larger than maybe 2,000 people, so I never thought we'd be able to play places this big," drummer Patrick Carney added. "I do know things have changed a little bit, because we've been touring for a very long time, and every single show, I sweat through an entire shirt and pair of pants, and after almost every show, I ask our tour manager if I could have some laundry done; and yesterday, my laundry was done for the first time."

Clean pants are very important. And while the Keys are still very firmly in the eye of the El Camino storm, they've already laid out a list of goals they'd like to accomplish in 2012 ("We just want to make it through without getting some pneumonia or something like that," Auerbach joked), which, as they told MTV News following the premiere of their "Gold on the Ceiling" video, also includes plans for a new album — if they find the time, of course.

"We actually just talked about it a couple days ago,[but] we can't really [write on the road]," Auerbach said. "It's kind of impossible, because we're both so insecure that we don't like messing up in front of people, and that's all we do when we try to write songs, is mess up over and over again. [But] Maybe [by the] end of this year, who knows?"

What are you expecting from the Keys' next album? Let us know in the comments!

NEW YORK — Losing isn't pretty, just ask Gisele Bundchen. After her husband, Tom Brady, and his New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the New York Giants on Sunday night, the supermodel had a few choice words for the quarterback's teammates — and it was all captured on camera.

"My husband cannot f---ing throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time," she said, expressing her feelings about the disappointing loss. "I can't believe they dropped the ball so many times."

Bundchen has since been heavily criticized for the comments. While some fans argue that the supermodel was only defending her husband, others took issue with her placing the blame on Brady's teammates.

But there's one camp that definitely has Bundchen's back: the Victoria's Secret Angels. MTV News caught up with some of the ladies on Wednesday (February 8) at the Victoria's Secret Kiss and Tell Valentine's Day Event, and they had a lot to say about the onetime Angel.

"I think that everybody was getting so into the game, and I think that it's her husband and she just really cared about it," Lindsay Ellingson said. "I don't think she meant anything bad by what she said and she was just so passionate, I don't blame her. [She was] standing up for her man."

Although model Doutzen Kroes she didn't know exactly what was said on Super Bowl night, she argued that Bundchen was justified.

"I don't know the whole deal about it," Kroes said, "[But] I think you always have to stand up for your husband, you're a team. And you know if she did that, I would've done the same."

Fellow Brazilian Adriana Lima, who had her own Super Bowl highlights with two prime-time commercials, quickly came to the defense of her friend, saying, "Leave her alone!"

MTV's legendary hidden-camera show will re-launch with rotating cast of guest hosts on March 29 at 10 p.m. ET.
By Gil Kaufman

One of MTV's most beloved series, "Punk'd," is gearing up for a fresh round of hidden-camera celebrity gotchas when it re-launches next month with a whole new look and feel.

The prank show from mastermind/ executive producer Ashton Kutcher, which originally aired from 2003 to 2007, will hit the air at 10 p.m. ET on March 29 as part of a new hour-long block of original programming that will also include a "Jersey Shore" spin-off show entitled, "The Pauly D Project."

Check out the 15 most memorable moments from the original "Punk'd" show here.

While Kutcher enjoyed taking down his pals and unsuspecting celebrities last time, the 2.0 version of "Punk'd" will feature a rotating cast of celebrity hosts each week. Among those lined up to fill the "Two and a Half Men" star's shoes are: Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kellan Lutz, Hayden Panettiere, Bam Margera and "Punk'd" alum Dax Shepard, among others. They will prank their fellow Hollywood pals, including Khloé Kardashian Odom, "Teen Wolf" star Tyler Posey, Demi Lovato and many more.

Not only will the celebrity hosts take the punking to a new and unnecessarily complex level, but for the first time in series history, viewers will also get a behind-the-scenes peek at what it takes to pull off these elaborate pranks.

During its initial run, "Punk'd" pulled some all-time classic gags on such unsuspecting targets, one of which occurred in the series premiere, when a then-22-year-old Justin Timberlake broke down in tears when he thought government agents were seizing his home because of $900,000 in unpaid taxes. Other classic bits included one in which Beyoncé is tricked into believing that she caused a giant Christmas tree to topple over on some presents intended for a group of underprivileged children, ruining their holiday.

Catch "Punk'd" when it returns on Thursday, March 29 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

It isn't all GTL with Pauly D, and on his new MTV show, "The Pauly D Project," the "Jersey Shore" breakout star is ready to show the world a whole new side.

As a DJ, Paul "Pauly D" Delvecchio has already accomplished more than his "Shore" fans may realize. He's toured with Britney Spears, earned himself a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and signed a deal with 50 Cent's G-Note Records. "The Pauly D Project" will follow the Rhode Island native as he handles his growing musical stardom.

"It'll be probably along the lines of, I used to be this DJ in Rhode Island, DJing two sets a week, hustling, promoting," Pauly explained to MTV News back in January 2011. "And all of a sudden, I'm on this show, and now they're sending private jets for me to DJ for these huge crowds, yet I'm still the same guy that was DJing for 200 people, just loving life."

On this journey Pauly will have to separate from his "Shore" family, but the new show promises its own cast of colorful characters. There's Pauly's road manager from Rhode Island, Michael "Biggie" Morgan, and the DJ's personal bodyguard and friend Gerard "Big Jerry" Gialanella.

For photos of Pauly D over the years, click here.

Don't be surprised if Pauly's G-Note boss also makes a couple of cameos. In December, 50 Cent spoke about Pauly's new show and how it will become a springboard for his music. "He obviously has a huge platform moving forward. His show is a spin-off from 'Jersey Shore,' " 50 said. "And being in front of large audiences every night DJing — we're gonna make a hit record out of the actual material that we have around and some of the new stuff that we'll put together."

As a part of the "Jersey Shore" cast, Pauly helped drive that show to become TV's hottest series over the course of five seasons, so there's no telling what he will bring to the first "Shore" spin-off. You're just going to have to tune in. "The Pauly D Project" will premiere at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday, March 29, immediately following the all-new "Punk'd" series.

Don't miss "Jersey Shore" every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. For continuing "Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.

Can Bruno Mars' Hooligans Take Home Grammy Gold?
Wed, 8 Feb 2012 03:01:49 EST -

MTV News takes a look at the history of Album of the Year nominee Doo-Wops & Hooligans.

Bruno Mars showed he was more than just B.o.B and Travie McCoy's hook guy when he dropped Doo-Wops & Hooligans back in October 2010 — and he's got an Album of the Year nomination at Sunday's Grammys to prove it.

With an ear for vintage-sounding details and a love for a good melody, Mars unleashed an album that would spawn megahits and make the Hawaii native (and former Elvis Presley impersonator) a household name, not to mention the go-to guy for the likes of hip-hop legends Eminem and Lil Wayne.

For the smash debut, Mars hooked up with his production team, the Smeezingtons (Mars, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine), as well as A-list talent like songwriter Claude Kelley, producer and collaborator Damian Marley and former Fall Out Boy leading man Patrick Stump. The result: an album that paid homage to Mars' love of, you guessed it, doo-wop and proved that he has a talent for crafting modern-day pop songs that could connect with a wide-ranging audience. Never forgetting his roots, he also worked with "F--- You" collaborator Cee Lo Green and brought B.o.B on the album.

"I want the world to fall in love with my music, that's what I'm doing music for. I want to be able to do shows and have people come and see me do my thing," Mars explained to MTV News back in 2010 about the album.

His wish certainly came true. When it dropped, Doo-Wops & Hooligans debuted at #3 on the Billboard albums chart and has since sold nearly 1.5 million copies. The love didn't end there: "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade" topped the charts, and "The Lazy Song" peaked at #4.

Mars found a way to keep everyone talking, displaying his creativity not only in song, but also in videos. The clips for those tracks were almost as buzzworthy as the songs themselves. The VMA-nominated video for "Grenade" managed to capture the sadness of the song, with Mars dragging a piano through the streets of Los Angeles only to find that his lady love no longer loves him.

"It was my concept," the singer explained about the video. "I said, 'I want to drag a piano.' I got my friend Nabil to come direct it, and it was a risk, because I still hear jokes to this day like, 'What the hell you doing dragging a piano?' " he said. "But it's my art, so shut up!"

He also had everyone buzzing when he dropped his video for "The Lazy Song." Where "Grenade" relied on heart, the "Lazy" video was all about making everyone laugh. It featured dance crew Poreotics (from "America's Best Dance Crew") done up in monkey masks dancing alongside Mars. In fact, it even got a Best Choreography nod at the VMAs.

"We worked really hard on it, and we wanted to give people something to laugh at and show personality in the song and what we're talking about," he said. " 'The Lazy Song' is not necessarily the song you want to hear in the club, but we put our monkey dance to it."

Now his focus is on trying to take home a shining Grammy statue come February 12. And it's not just his album the Grammys have recognized, but also his heartbreaking ballad "Grenade," which is up for three awards at the show including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

"Worked extremely hard on 'Grenade.' That was the hardest song on the whole album to finish, because we knew we had something and to get all that emotion out," he explained. "I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we're really happy that that song is being recognized, because that's like our trophy song.

"Incredible. We worked really hard," he added about all the recognition the album has received. "We worked hard in the studio right down the street, actually. And it's a little tiny shack, but for the two years we were in there, we just locked ourselves in that room and came up with Doo-Wops & Hooligans."

Kanye, Jay-Z Battle Young Money For Best Rap Album Grammy

Will Yeezy capitalize on his double nods in the category, or will Lil Wayne or Nicki Minaj take the throne on Sunday night?
By Rob Markman

Who would've ever thought that hip-hop would take it this far? The Notorious B.I.G. posed the question on his 1994 classic "Juicy," and the 2012 Grammy nominations prove that hip-hop continues to rise to new heights. For the second year in a row, a rap artist is leading in Grammy nods: Last year it was Eminem, this year Kanye West.

Yeezy's seven nods take the cake. Two of West's nominations come in the hotly contested Best Rap Album category; one for his solo My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and the other for his and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne tag-team LP.

Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV, Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday and Lupe Fiasco's Lasers round out the category, and while the odds are clearly in the Louis Vuitton Don's favor, he isn't exactly a lock.

If record sales are any indication, it will be tough to ignore the first-week sales of Wayne's Carter IV. The approximate 960,000 units Weezy sold in his first week didn't earn him a platinum plaque right out of the gate, but it stood as one of the biggest hip-hop stories of 2011. CIV has since been certified double platinum by the RIAA, and though some critics panned it, high-powered singles like "6 Foot 7 Foot," "She Will" and "John" helped cement Wayne's ninth solo album as a fan-favorite.

Just like her Young Money boss, Nicki Minaj reigned throughout the year thanks to Pink Friday. Released at the end of 2010 and anchored by the infectious and inescapable bonus track "Super Bass," Nicki's debut LP helped her to penetrate the pop space while still keeping a foot firmly planted in the streets with her "Did It On 'Em" single.

Lupe Fiasco may be the dark horse of the group but considering the Recording Academy's knack for acknowledging hip-hop with a message, don't be surprised if the Chicago MC takes home the golden gramophone. Lasers was a commercial success thanks to its radio-friendly sound, but it didn't sit well with some die-hard fans because it was a departure from Fiasco's earlier work. Regardless of the LP's sound bed, Lupe's message remained potent. His criticism of President Obama on "Words I Never Said" was polarizing and opened up much political debate.

Kanye's MBDTF was highly touted when it dropped in November 2010, but was seemingly eclipsed by the meteoric Watch the Throne collaboration with Jay-Z. Discussing MBDTF's Album of the Year snub, Yeezy blamed himself, saying that he should have spaced his releases out "just a little bit more." But in the Best Rap Album category, his maddening pace only increases his chances.

Rick Ross Says Young Jeezy Beef Isn't 'Personal'
Wed, 8 Feb 2012 01:45:31 EST -

'As far as I'm concerned, bring that money bag, let's shake the world up,' Ross tells MTV News of a possible accord with Jeezy.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Rick Ross
Photo: MTV News

Rick Ross is about his business. The Maybach Music boss has been involved in a few rap dustups, most notably with 50 Cent and Young Jeezy, and they may have taken shots at one another in their music, but Rozay says he hasn't taken any of it personally.

"Right now it's just all about me remaining creative, keep putting this dream team together. That's what I'm about and I think that's what everybody out there should be about, get your ones up," Ross advised when he spoke with Sway at a French Montana video shoot in Miami last month. "Success is the quickest way to kill the enemy."

Rick Ross threw shots at an unnamed adversary on "Rich Forever," a track off his new mixtape of the same name. "Your sh-- pushed back 'cause it ain't buzzin'," Rozay rapped. He never actually mentioned Jeezy's name and in this age of subliminal rap disses, anything is possible. Still, the line did catch the attention of fans because of the multiple delays that the Snowman's TM 103 album faced.

The Double-M Genius never mentioned Young Jeezy's name during the interview either, but when Sway specifically asked if he and the ATL trap star could sit down and work things out, Rozay was open to the idea if it was financially beneficial. "I'm always 'bout business; that's why I'm here. I haven't taken nothin' personal since I came in the game and I think if you in this business and plan on having longevity in this you shouldn't take nothin' personal," Ross said, noting that their differences never led to any physical altercations. "Ain't nobody stepped on my Jordans yet, not out here. As far as I'm concerned, bring that money bag, let's shake the world up, that's what Double M-G is about."

The contention between the two rap titans began to take shape in August 2010, when Jeezy freestyled over Rozay's "B.M.F." instrumental, titling his version "Death B4 Dishonor." In the Jeezy version, the Snowman took exception took Ross' BMF (Black Mafia Family) shout-out, playing up his own real life ties to the reputed drug organization. There have been subliminal lines and shots thrown back and forth since, but not much more.

When Jeezy appeared on "RapFix Live" in November, he wasn't against having a sit-down with Rick Ross. "I feel like the whole started thing from a clip on WorldStarHipHop, and my thing was, if I'm a boss and you a boss, let's sit down and be bosses," he said. "You take a clip that somebody edited and run with that? What part of the game is that? If you felt like that, hit me up, let's chop it up, we bosses."

So does that mean that the two rap stars can come to a peaceful accord? Only time will tell.

Will Rick Ross and Young Jeezy ever be at peace? Leave your comment below.

'The Bourne Legacy' Trailer: Five Key Scenes
Wed, 8 Feb 2012 01:58:49 EST -

Jeremy Renner's rogue agent is introduced in badass 'Bourne' fashion.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Jeremy Renner makes his big debut as the latest agent gone rogue in "The Bourne Legacy." Picking up where Matt Damon left off, Renner plays Aaron Cross, an apparent improvement over Jason Bourne.

You'll have to head over to Apple to check out the brand-new trailer, but we have the five key scenes you need to play attention to:

Background
The trailer immediately sets the mood with a little help from the opening credits of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." The bars sliding across the screen directly borrow from the horror classic and make things creepy quickly. Jeremy Renner's character gives the name "Kenneth," despite being listed in the credits as Aaron Cross. At the beginning of the trailer, Kenneth/Aaron does not look well. His left eye sags, and the right side of his face is speckled with blood. Immediately, we're questioning who he is and what he's been through, a good thing when introducing a new character to the series.

'Well, That Has Healed Well'
If Aaron is "Treadstone without the inconsistencies," that may imply he is, in fact, stronger than Matt Damon's Jason Bourne. The physician looking at Aaron's hand in the trailer remarks that it had healed well, as if it's something remarkable. Does the removal of those Treadstone inconsistencies include a rapid healing ability?

Introducing Edward Norton
Norton joins the cast as the newest villain in the series, and he makes for a welcome addition. In the trailer, we're introduced to his character, Byer, who tests Aaron to see if he's completely committed to the program, known as "Outcome." Norton leaves little doubt that he's going to make for a worthy opponent in a series known for its intelligent bad guys.

Reintroducing Albert Finney
The introduction of a new main character does not preclude the appearance of some familiar faces. Both Finney and Joan Allen reprise their roles, as Dr. Hirsch and Pamela Landy, respectively. They will be the main through lines to the original trilogy and should help make a little more sense of the new direction for the series.

The Fire Extinguisher
Though it may not ultimately mean that much for the story, a move as inventive as sticking a nail into the end of the fire extinguisher has to be acknowledged.

"The Bourne Legacy" hits theaters August 3.

Actress teams up with Vogue's Anna Wintour for 'Runway to Win' fashion fundraiser.

Scarlett Johansson, a vocal Barack Obama supporter during his first election campaign, lent a hand to the President's re-election run on Tuesday night. The actress co-hosted a fundraiser event with Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour at a Theory store in New York City, where they also promoted new merchandise.

The "Runway to Win" event brought together 23 of the biggest fashion designers, all of whom designed Obama swag to sell in support of the campaign. According to the Huffington Post, Johansson gave a talk in which she ticked off Obama's various accomplishments in the last three years, from signing the Fair Pay Act to ending Don't Ask Don't Tell.

But while the actress has been supportive during the president's first term, some of Obama's A-list supporters have been slower to sign on again. The "We Bought a Zoo" star seemed to hope the fashion project will help reignite hope.

"There is so much at stake in this campaign," Johansson said in a press release. "2012 will not be easy. We have to fight even harder this time around, and that's where Runway to Win will make a real difference."

The campaign collection includes merchandise, like tote bags, designed by Marc Jacobs, Sean John, Beyoncé and Tina Knowles, Derek Lam, Diane Von Furstenburg and Tory Burch. Supporters can also buy T-shirts designed by Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu and Tracy Reese.

While the items will certainly run you more than your average T-shirt (tees are going for about $45), the prices are still lower than what merch from these designer brand typically costs. The Obama campaign hopes bringing on fashion leaders will encourage more Americans to become involved in the president's movement. The Runway to Win online store lists items by designer; all proceeds go to the Obama Victory fund, a committee authorized by Obama for America and the Democratic National Committee.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen who will face Obama at the ballot box in November. In last night's GOP primary, Rick Santorum came out on top, sweeping wins in three states and coming out ahead of presumed front-runner Mitt Romney.

'The River' Is A 'Little Movie Every Week,' Star Says
Wed, 8 Feb 2012 01:06:12 EST -

Short season tells a 'whole, complete story,' Eloise Mumford tells MTV News.
By Josh Wigler

It won't take long to cross "The River" — only six more weeks, in fact!

Despite boasting an intense, mythology-driven premise — a naturalist goes missing in the Amazon, leading his friends and family to search for him while fending off supernatural twists and turns around every river bend — the new ABC series, which debuted on Tuesday, only has eight episodes to unfold in its first season. The two-hour premiere counts for two of those episodes, leaving only six weeks before "The River" overflows in late March. It may not seem like enough time to get to the bottom of the show's biggest mysteries (What happened to Emmet Cole? What's lurking in the jungle?), but "River" actress Eloise Mumford told MTV News that the first season's breakneck pace is actually "a huge advantage."

"It's an event now," said Mumford, who stars in the series as young adventurer Lena Landry. "It's like a miniseries. It's a little movie every week. And honestly, that's what we did. We worked our butts off. We shot some really incredible footage. Usually dailies when you shoot a show are, I don't know, an hour or two a day. We did like 13 hours of footage every day. It's an insane amount of footage! They edit it all together and it's just really rich."

Mumford also believes that with eight episodes, fans will see the season weave a very satisfying narrative, because the writers were able to build the story based on a smaller episode order.

"People will be able to tune in each week and it'll leave them wanting more. But also they won't get sick of it in the middle," she said. "We knew all along that we were doing eight. That's what we were planning on. So the arc of the season isn't like, 'Shoot, what should our next episode be?' They had a plan from start to finish. It's a whole, complete story."

Well, perhaps not a whole complete story. Even if many questions are answered by the end of the show's first season, Mumford promised that the door is most certainly left open for a season-two comeback.

"Obviously there's a possibility to come back. It's definitely not wrapped up in a concrete way," she said. "[Fingers crossed for] season two!"

Adele's 21 Scores 19th Week At #1

Grammy nominee followed by Lana Del Rey and Leonard Cohen on Billboard albums chart.

With a potentially huge night on the horizon at Sunday's Grammy Awards, Adele can start the celebration early if she wants: Her unstoppable 21 will top the Billboard albums chart for a 19th non-consecutive week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

In its 50th week on the charts, 21 moved another 122,000 copies, putting her total sales north of the 6.3 million mark. The next record she's aiming for — 20 weeks at the top — is held by Whitney Houston's soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" and Elvis Presley's Blue Hawaii.

A bit further behind was lightning-rod singer Lana Del Rey, whose Born to Die shifted 77,000 units in its chart debut. Poetic music legend Leonard Cohen came in at #3 with Old Ideas (41,000) and gospel singer Fred Hammond rounded out the new faces in the top 10 with God, Love & Romance (26,000).

The rest of the top 10: the 2012 Grammy Nominees compilation (#4, 34,000), Kidz Bop 21 (#5, 30,000), Drake's Take Care (#6, 30,000), Tim McGraw's Emotional Traffic (#7, 29,000), LMFAO's Sorry for Party Rocking (#9, 22,000) and Rihanna's Talk That Talk (#10, 22,000).

One of the week's biggest movers was buzz act Gotye, whose Making Mirrors jumped up 25 spots to #20 on sales of 18,000, while hard-rock legends Metallica's Beyond Magnetic 30th anniversary EP sold nearly 14,000 copies to land at #29.

On the iTunes charts, Kelly Clarkson ruled the singles tally with "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)," followed by Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain," David Guetta's "Turn Me On," Tyga's "Rack City," Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg's "Young, Wild & Free" and Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'." Rounding out the tally was Flo Rida with "Good Feeling," the cast of "Glee" with "Smooth Criminal," Gym Class Heroes' "Ass Back Home" and Jessie J's "Domino."

The iTunes albums chart belonged to Madonna with pre-orders for MDNA, Del Rey, Adele, the Madonna compilation Celebration, Drake, Gotye, Cohen, Clarkson's, Stronger, Grammy-nominated DJ Skrillex's EP Bangarang and the soundtrack to the movie "Drive."

Adele will likely hit the record mark next week, with her only competition coming from reunited rockers Van Halen's comeback album, A Different Kind of Truth, as well as a covers album from Paul McCartney and a new album from The Fray.

Roland Martin Suspended By CNN For Offensive Tweets
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 17:03:38 EST -

Roland Martin may have been joking about Super Bowl-related topics with some off-color Tweets Sunday night, but his bosses at CNN definitely didn't find it funny.

The political contributor has been suspended by the network after his remarks - most notably about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad - were called homophobic.

Gay-rights powerhouse GLAAD pushed hard for CNN to fire Martin. That did not happen, but disciplinary sanctions were taken, and his return date is not clear.

Roland Martin Tweet

In a statement, CNN said:

"[Martin's] tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated."

"We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland Martin will not be appearing on our air for the time being."

Martin fired off the controversial tweet (above) during the Super Bowl.

In another, he wrote, "Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass."

Martin tried to backpedal by issuing an apology Monday.

"Based on several tweets I made on my Twitter feed on Super Bowl Sunday yesterday, I have been accused by members of the LGBT community of being supportive of violence against gays and lesbians and bullying," he wrote.

"That is furthest from the truth, and I sincerely regret any offense my words caused."

GLAAD, for one, seems satisfied, saying in a statement: "CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community."

"Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence."

"We at GLAAD look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and achieve our common goal of reducing anti-LGBT violence as well as the language that contributes to it."

What do you think? Should Martin have been fired?

Eddie Cibrian: (Mostly) Naked For Charisma!
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 16:50:51 EST -

We've seen Eddie Cibrian naked for Charisma. Now we're seeing him ... almost naked. The actor is stripping down again for the brand, this time for the purpose of modeling some fluffy, soft towels in a sexy Spring 2012 ad campaign.

Appropriate, since he's wearing nothing but:

Eddie Cibrian in Just a TowelEddie Cibrian Shirtless Photo

Cibrian, divorced from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Brandi Glanville and married to country singer LeAnn Rimes, tries to keep the modeling job in perspective.

“You have a lot of people on the photo shoot looking at you, going, ‘Oh that looks wonderful, that’s unbelievable ... those [towels] look great,’” he said.

“I realized it was all about the product, and not about me.”

Still, Cibrian, who appears in the upcoming Tyler Perry film Good Deeds, makes it pretty hard to focus on those towels ... are we right ladies?

2012 Republican Delegate Count, Popular Vote Totals
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 16:28:50 EST -

Rick Santorum's Colorado and Missouri caucus wins put a nice dent in Mitt Romney's aura of inevitability, but didn't come close to overtaking him in the delegate count.

On the other hand, he has just 87 of 1,144 delegates needed to win the GOP nomination, with more than 80 percent of the U.S. still awaiting a chance to be heard.

Take away Florida's winner-take-all primary - one of only two such races so far - and his total would be even less impressive. Take a look at the delegate count so far:

Delegates 2/8

The "non-binding" states allow their delegates, or a portion of them, to change their minds regardless of the election results, though they are unlikely to do so.

Some delegates are also "unpledged," meaning they are not tied to election results, which is why not all of the totals in the table above (by Real Clear Politics) add up.

Jon Huntsman won two delegates in New Hampshire, but is no longer in the race. As for the first contest, Iowa, CNN offers a different tabulation altogether.

It's confusing, to say the least, but offers an indication of where things are headed after last night, and looking ahead to the Super Tuesday elections on March 6.

Missouri's primary yesterday was non-official, so it is not included above. That state holds its caucus March 17, at which point delegates will actually be awarded.

Maine's caucuses are a week-long affair, concluding this Sunday. Arizona and Michigan are the next primaries on the Republican schedule, both set for February 28.

Washington votes March 3, with Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Alaska, Virginia, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Idaho, Massachusetts and Vermont all casting ballots March 6.

Below is the aggregate and state-by-state popular vote as of today. By this measure, Romney's lead is even less significant, as he's won well under half the votes:

Pop. Vote 2/8

The question remains: Can Santorum, Newt Gingrich and/or Ron Paul mount a serious offensive in the coming weeks that will make this a race beyond March 6?

Right now, it's still wide open, but with hundreds of delegates up for grabs on or before that date, a Romney sweep could finally propel him ahead of the field.

He would still be a long way from clinching the Republican presidential nomination, but from a financial and momentum standpoint, that may be his opponents' last stand.

If no candidate makes it to 1,144 by the end of the primary season this summer, the winner would be brokered/decided at the Republican National Convention.

Wouldn't that be something ...

Brandon Jacobs to Gisele Bundchen: Shut Up and Look Cute!
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 15:23:09 EST -

New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs has a brief message for supermodel Gisele Bundchen, following her blaming the New England Patriots' Super Bowl loss on dropped passes by husband Tom Brady's teammates:

Just shut yer yap and just look gorgeous!

The Brazilian beauty made news after she was filmed, unknowingly, by The Insider, defending Brady from gloating Giants fans shortly after Super Bowl XLVI.

"You have to catch the ball when you're supposed to catch the ball," yelled Bundchen to Giants fans as she was on her way out of Lucas Oil stadium.'

Gisele and Brandon

"My husband can't f--king throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time," she continued. "I can't believe they dropped the ball so many times."

When asked by reporters about the rant during Tuesday's victory celebration at MetLife stadium in New Jersey, Jacobs offered some unsolicited advice:

"She just needs to continue to stay cute and shut up," the outspoken star said.

His teammate, defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora, expressed a little more sympathy:

"I mean she's supposed to stay out of things like that, but at the end of the day that's their relationship and she has the right to say whatever she wants."

Gotta like a gal standing by her man, even if you're glad said man lost.

She's also not wrong. That Wes Welker drop was an absolute killer.

Ellen DeGeneres Responds to JC Penney Protest, Lists Her Traditional Values
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 14:42:46 EST -

Ellen DeGeneres was recently named a spokesperson for JC Penney.

Once this news broke, a conservative organization known as One Million Moms quickly launched an offensive to get the comedian fired from the gig. Bill O'Reilly addressed this topic on Fox News last night, taking the side that anyone is free to simply not shop at JC Penney... but to lobby for Ellen's ousting is un-American and wrong.

DeGeneres also touched on the scandal during her talk show monologue, keeping it short, but relying on two points:

  1. A number of comments left on the One Million Moms' own Facebook page are in support of JC Penney and express their authors' intention to shop there even more now.
  2. Have a problem with Ellen's "traditional values," as the group claims citizens should? Here they are: Honesty. Quality. Kindness. Compassion.

Vote now: Do you think Ellen should be fired from this role?

The Vampire Diaries Trio Covers EW, Nearly Shuts Down Twitter
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 14:18:52 EST -

Forgive us for ripping off a previous CW marketing campaign, but: OMFG.

There really is no alternate reaction to the trio of covers Entertainment Weekly just released in honor of The Vampire Diaries, specifically stars Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. All three are featured across the main cover and two collector's items, and nary a shirt is to be seen...

Copies of the issue go on sale Friday, while inside producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson dish on the challenge of writing for a show with dueling, passionate fan bases.

"When we want Stefan and Elena to have a moment together, how can we do that and not have our Delena fans outraged?” Plec asks.

We've got an idea, Julie: just take Damon's shirt off. That will satisfy all viewers.

The Bourne Legacy Trailer: Jeremy Renner Takes Over
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 14:04:04 EST -

The first trailer for The Bourne Legacy has debuted and with it, Jeremy Renner takes over the franchise from Matt Damon. Does he prove to be a worthy replacement?

From the looks of it, yes.

Renner plays a different agent than Damon's Bourne (hence the Legacy aspect of the title), and Damon’s character still looms large, making the transition seamless.

Plus, Renner looks bad ass as Kenneth Kitson. Check it out:

Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Scott Glenn and David Strathairn return from previous films, while newcomers Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz round out the cast of Legacy.

What do you think? Worth watching or taking a pass?

Courtney Robertson: The Bachelor MANEATER!
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 13:26:48 EST -

Courtney Robertson continues to stir up drama on The Bachelor and her controversial tactics have landed her on two different tabloid covers this week.

Probably her true goal all along. "Winning!"

Speculation is running rampant about how long Courtney lasts (The Bachelor spoilers we've posted offer more on that topic), but one thing is clear:

She is the star of the show this season, for better or worse.

Courtney the Man-EaterBen Flajnik TRICKED!

In their new issues, Us Weekly and In Touch have tag-teamed Courtney Robertson (they're probably not the first ... winning!!!) with the following accusations:

  • She was dating an old rich guy while on the show!
  • There's a secret sex tape that could RUIN her!
  • Her attraction to Ben Flajnik is a complete lie!
  • She's even worse than you think!

Okay, at least one of those is BS. No way could she be worse than we - and many other Bachelor fans, based on the majority comments we've read on THG - think.

Yes, we realize it's a TV show and they edit to great the best narrative that gets people talking. But do you honestly believe none of this is Court's real personality?

Tell us: What's your take on Courtney Robertson?

Gary Busey: Nearly Broke, Filing For Bankruptcy
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 13:01:05 EST -

Occasionally troubled actor Gary Busey has less than $50,000 to his name and more than $500,000 in various debts, according to his recent bankruptcy filing.

Despite starring in more than 70 movies and a bunch of TV shows in his career, the 67-year-old Busey filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in California yesterday.

On the paperwork, Gary checked the box showing he has less than $50,000 in assets and is somewhere between $500,000 and $1,000,000 in the fiscal hole.

Warm Up the Busey

Busey indicates he may owe money to the IRS, various lawyers, UCLA Medical Center, Wells Fargo, L.A. County Waterworks Districts and a storage company.

He also notes that he might owe money to a woman named Carla Loeffler, who sued Busey for allegedly trampling her en route to an airport gate in Tulsa.

No word on how Gary has so little money to his name after decades as a working actor, but cocaine futures have really skyrocketed of late, so that can't help.
